
There are two strains of herpes simples virus HSV-1 and HSV-2 and these two viruses are the cause of cold sores in humans for at least two thousand years one of the earliest references to cold sores is from the roman empire where the reigning emperor of the time had to place a ban on kissing to try and combat the huge instances of cold sores in the population.
